Sometimes making a custom engagement ring personal doesn’t mean making the personal details obvious.

This ring was designed to stay very classic: yellow gold, graduating diamond accents and a 2-carat lab-grown oval center diamond.

The couple also wanted to incorporate their birthstones — ruby for July and citrine for November.

We considered using the colored gemstones among the side diamonds, but once we started visualizing the different combinations, the color began changing the overall look of the ring more than we wanted.

Instead, the ruby and citrine were tucked underneath the center diamond as hidden peekaboo stones. From the top, you see a classic diamond engagement ring. From the side, you find the detail that makes this one specifically theirs.

Wedding-band selection matters with a design like this too. A band that sits directly against the hidden gemstones can cover them or create unnecessary contact. A contoured or chevron-style band is one way to create additional clearance.

If you wear your rings in the swimming pool, this is why I always recommend taking them off first.

A customer brought this engagement ring to Emigh Jewelry Company after one of the prongs holding her center diamond broke completely off.

The fracture immediately caught my attention. Then, as I started removing the remaining prongs, the white gold began flaking and crumbling instead of simply bending.

She had worn the ring in swimming pools before.

Chlorine-containing chemicals can attack components of gold alloys and eventually leave the metal brittle and much more susceptible to cracking under stress.

While repairing the ring, I also found that the original center crown had been installed crooked and was basically sitting on top of the ring. I replaced it with a properly supported peg-style crown, added additional support at the cathedral shoulders, and reset her original diamond.

This is one of those jewelry-care lessons that can save you a much bigger repair later.

Take your gold jewelry off before pools and hot tubs, and keep it away from bleach.

After her last vintage jewelry purchase online turned out to have loose diamonds, missing prongs and stress cracks hiding underneath it, this client came back with another online purchase.

So yes—the first thing I did was put these diamond studs under magnification.

Fortunately, this time everything checked out.

Even better, the brown diamond centers matched the vintage pendant we made for her almost perfectly.

If you remember the original project, we converted her vintage ring into a pendant using an old white gold chain. When that necklace was shortened, I told her to save the two leftover sections because they could make a great pair of earrings someday.

She actually came back with them.

We removed the screwbacks from the diamond studs, used leverbacks with a detail that felt more appropriate for the vintage chain, and built the hardware needed to bring everything together.

Now those two leftover pieces of chain are a matching pair of diamond earrings.

I’ve been seeing more engagement rings move away from the classic straight row of diamonds and toward this scattered diamond style.

In this video, I’m setting a 2ct emerald-cut diamond into a yellow gold engagement ring with scattered side diamonds. It’s a subtle design change, but it gives the ring a very different feel.

When we first showed this 1.61ct yellow radiant diamond, most of the interest was from people imagining it in a ring.

The person who ended up getting it had something different in mind.

Rather than the bright canary color often associated with yellow diamonds, this stone has a deeper golden-honey appearance. We paired it with 18kt yellow gold and added scrollwork along the sides and bail to create this custom pendant.

A gentleman brought us a yellow gold heart pendant he inherited from his mother. He wanted his wife to be able to wear the original diamonds, but she primarily wears white gold.

We removed the diamonds, recreated the pendant in white gold, reset the original stones, and melted the original mounting so the gold itself could be returned to him.

Some custom engagement rings are personalized in ways you notice immediately. This one saves most of those details for underneath.

He wanted their Christian faith incorporated into the design, along with two of their favorite Bible verses and something representing each of them individually.

We added crosses beneath the center stone, engraved both verses inside the ring, and built a diamond bridge with a gemstone representing each of them on opposite sides.

The finished platinum ring centers a 2.5-carat natural marquise diamond with a hidden halo.

Projects like this are a good example of what custom jewelry can actually mean—you don’t have to make the ring visually complicated to make it personal.

This ring actually opens — and there’s a very practical reason why.

The mechanism is called an arthritic shank. For someone whose knuckle is considerably larger than the base of their finger, a normal ring can either be impossible to get over the knuckle or extremely loose once it gets there.

An arthritic shank opens at the bottom, allowing the ring to pass over the widest part of the finger before closing again at the proper ring size.

This sapphire and diamond ring recently came into Emigh Jewelry Company in Cranberry Township, PA, but the granddaughter who may eventually wear the jewelry wanted to reuse it differently.

While disassembling the ring, I also found chips along the edge of the sapphire and scratching underneath where it had been contacting the neighboring diamonds.

The oval diamonds will become stud earrings, while the sapphire can be repolished and used in another custom piece.

A young man brought us two rings and an earring his mom gave him to help create an engagement ring.

There were plenty of materials to work with—including sapphires, diamonds and a small old European-cut diamond—but one of the most important parts of custom jewelry is knowing what not to use.

The original sapphires weren’t the right quality for the new design, and the European-cut diamond wasn’t large enough for the center stone he wanted.

Instead, we built the engagement ring around a 1-carat round diamond with pear-shaped blue sapphire accents and twisting diamond details along the sides.

The gold from his mom’s jewelry was traded toward the project, and every unused gemstone was returned to him for something else in the future.

Personally, we’d love to see some of those original stones eventually incorporated into a custom wedding band.

A lot of people don’t realize that some certified diamonds have a tiny grading report number laser-inscribed right on the stone.

While setting this 1ct natural diamond into a custom engagement ring, I kept rotating it so that inscription would line up between the prongs instead of being covered. That way, if the original paperwork is ever lost, a jeweler can still read the number under magnification and identify the diamond.

I also always polish the inside of the basket before setting the stone, because once the diamond is in place, that area can’t be polished again without removing it.
