This rock-crystal heron was made in Milan’s Saracchi workshop around 1580. Gold, enamel, cameos, and garnets dress the bird for princely company, while actual heron feathers—since renewed—add a bit of stunning realism. Such animal-shaped vessels ranked among the treasures of Archduke Ferdinand II’s Kunstkammer, where costly materials and the formidable skill required to work them were part of the attraction. Rock crystal herons can still be identified in his collection’s 1596 inventory.
