Before it became a collector’s piece, it was simply serious silver.

This Engelhard bar is stamped 100 troy ounces and .999+ fine silver. But the name, hallmark, and serial number tell a story beyond its weight.

Engelhard’s roots reach back to 1902, when Charles W. Engelhard Sr. began building a precious-metals business in Newark, New Jersey. The company became an important name in refining, and its silver bars eventually developed a following of their own.

This bar appears to belong to a cast series with examples documented back to 1975. Today, collectors study those production variations, comparing stamps, serial numbers, and finishes to understand where each piece fits in Engelhard’s history.

BASF acquired Engelhard in 2006, but the name lives on in collections like this.

Some bullion carries more than precious-metal value. It carries a moment in history.

This vintage Watergate art bar was issued in 1973, while the scandal surrounding President Richard Nixon’s administration was still unfolding. The design depicts Nixon covering his mouth beneath the words “Speak No Evil,” a not-so-subtle reference to the secrecy, denials and attempted cover-up that came to define Watergate.

The original break-in occurred in 1972, but 1973 brought nationally televised Senate hearings and the revelation that conversations inside the White House had been recorded. Nixon would ultimately resign the following year.

More than five decades later, this piece remains part bullion, part political satire and part historical time capsule.

Pieces like this are also a good reminder that older bullion should not automatically be valued by weight alone. Its maker, rarity, condition, subject matter and collector demand can all contribute to its value.
