I made you all something. This is RADDLE, my new word transformation game.

raddle.quest

It’s a twist on conventional word ladders — instead of changing one letter at each step, you’re changing the entire word based on a clue. But it’s up to you to determine which clue to use.

Have fun and spread the word! Link in bio.

By treating Z, O & A as 2, 0 & 4, respectively, we can find 8 of the 9 the letters in PARIS 2024, in order, in the name of Greek Water Polo player PANAGIOTIS TZORTZATOS (). With some creativity, the missing R can be carved out of the N. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of our name of the year!

This will only get easier in 4 years, when the letters to search for will be LAZOZB.

This has been fun! Thanks for following along. I’ll be back with more letter-based curiosities, onomastic and otherwise, very soon.

TERESA PORTELA () and TERESA PORTELA () are two different women from two different teams (Spain and Portugal) who are both competing in Canoe Sprint in Paris. According to the younger Teresa’s bio, she heard about the older Teresa when she was 10 and “she became an inspiration. She was someone to look up to in canoeing.”

There are a few more duplicated names in the games, but most are two folks on the same national team.

Congrats to and Jorge Campos for today’s Golds in the Artistic Onomastic Games, awarding achievement for interesting names at the 2024 Paris . Both of these athletes play table tennis, and both of their names have exactly the same vowel/consonant pattern as TABLE TENNIS, which is to say CVCCV CVCCVC. I’m sure DOLLY PARTON and JIMMY CARTER are two of their biggest fans.

If you don’t consider spaces, a few more folks match their sports, like RYAN HELD () and SWIMMING, and DAN WEN and HOCKEY. But like many competitions, a little space is what separates first place from the rest.
