"Gustav teaches children and seniors the basics of woodworking. This fear that he remembers distinctly from his childhood is one that he recognizes in many of his students as they begin their education in the shop. But this memory only fuels his drive to make this space one of learning, understanding, and also refuge–particularly for the children that he works with. Gustav feels like the dedication and attention that is required to be successful in a woodshop is something that a lot of the kids benefit from. He says it’s like turning the volume down; while the outside world is at times tumultuous for these kids, he tries to ensure that his shop is a place where they feel emboldened and empowered to not only learn woodcraft, but also to set their own goals and choose their own path within the shop."
