Last summer I had a thought. I wondered when the last time Charlie Russell had a visit from a horse. A week ago I called up the cemetery where he and his wife Nancy are laid to rest. Much to my suprise, the folks in charge thought it was a marvelous idea and wished me luck on my adventure. A few days ago my parents and I loaded up a couple of our bay ponies and hit the road. The mare in the video is Felon. I wasn't sure how she'd react, she hasn't been off the ranch much. Like the rest of her kind she handled it with grace. She stood and listened to me while I told her who she was meeting and a little about the man. I nearly sobbed when she lowered her head and smelled the grave. I believe she knew exactly who and what I was talking about. I also believe that Mr. Russell himself had a conversation with her. That evening I was using her to rope calves at my sister's branding. Well, Felon decided to have a come apart in the pen while I was dragging a calf to the fire. She took a few good jumps before I could throw the dallys, I hit the dirt like a sack of potatoes šŸ˜…. No critter was harmed. After the dust had settled my husband looked at me and said "I guess he needed an idea for another painting." Coincidence...maybe... but it sure is interesting timing.
