Michigan is the only place where you can walk a beach and pick up a more than 350-million-year-old Petoskey stone — a fossilized piece of ancient coral found naturally only here.
A Petoskey stone isn’t “just a rock.”
It’s part of a coral reef that once covered what is now northern Michigan.
Look closely at the pattern — the little hexagons.
Each one was:
• a mouth
• surrounded by tentacles
• belonging to a living coral animal called Hexagonaria percarinata
These reefs thrived in the Devonian Period. As they grew, individual coral colonies died and were buried under layers of sediment on the seafloor. Over millions of years, minerals replaced the coral and slowly turned it into stone — all while new coral was still growing on top.
The reefs didn’t vanish because the sea dried up; they collapsed during the long lead-up to one of Earth’s major mass-extinction events (not the asteroid one).
Fast-forward a few hundred million years:
Ice Age glaciers scraped the bedrock, broke up those ancient reefs, and spread the pieces across northern Michigan.
Lake Michigan’s waves reveal the best Petoskey stones today — smoothing them, tumbling them, and uncovering coral that hasn’t seen daylight since before dinosaurs existed.
It’s one of the coolest pieces of Michigan history you can hold in your hand.
Some states have gemstones or quartz. Michigan has ancient coral.

I think this would look perfect in our front yard (dreaming of giant crystals).
