I tell you, I am on fire today! Feeling the spice tearing through my veins. Not only did a scammer pick the worst day to try me but I’ve got some other challenges going on that have derailed my joy for the sparkles. I never thought I wouldn’t feel up to playing with the sparkles but the past few weeks have been a struggle.

BUT, it’s all good and I feel my resilience kicking in. Glad it’s Friday and the weekend is upon us.

I do have a few new pieces to share and will show and tell soon. In the meantime, I’m wearing my spice on my sleeve today.

Ok, it’s official. I’m keeping the tutti-frutti carved emerald necklace. I don’t have anything like it in my collection, it adds a beautiful pop of color to any neckmess or when worn solo, and it just sparks that joy - that something that makes the toes tingle and the stomach twitch.

I love a good watch chain. Talk about an antique piece of jewelry with character. These pieces were never meant to be worn around the neck, stacked with other necklaces and holders of charm jumbles. But here we are and I’m glad for the most epic restyling of a piece.

Even so, I’m always leery of a watch chain in excellent, pristine condition. These pieces were originally worn everyday, all day long- tugged on and grasped when checking the time. That means that these pieces have wear, dirt/grime, patina and other marks of a life well lived. Many times when a component failed, dog clip, spring ring, it was replaced- and sometimes not with a like for like part (hello gold fill!).

And all that to say that I picked up a lovely true yellow 18k watch chain. This new arrival is good, bad and ugly all at once. Swipe on for the details, all of them. And if you’re interested in acquiring this piece, let’s chat.

The good… crafted (mostly) in 18k yellow gold, no rosy tone and at a good wearable length of just over 16”. Each curb link bears a crown (UK) and 18 for the gold fineness. No other marks however. The components are all original and 18k as well. And the dog clip and spring ring function well.

Now the bad. Some of the links connecting the main curb chain with the dog clip have quite a bit of wear. And one link is open as shown. The wear is mainly localized to these connecting links, which leads me to the next point…

And the ugly… those connecting pieces of chain are 14k not 18k. Added later to lengthen the chain. The good news is that the original spring ring and dog clip were kept and attached to these pieces. And if it bothers you, the 14k links could be removed.

There is some thinning on the components but not enough to be a problem.

I’m sharing all of this because I want my clients to know exactly what they will be receiving. I tend to be hyper-sensitive to condition and disclosure thereof. I’ve purchased jewelry with issues that was not disclosed (and not fixable) and to say I was irritated is an understatement. As if that wasn’t bad enough, engaging with a seller where every piece is described as pristine condition when clearly it’s not

So I know that having “shiny” gold jewelry is not for many in the antique and vintage jewelry arena. We don’t want that original patina or blemish, aka “character”, to be removed. Whenever I’ve needed any bench work done on a piece, I do get the request not to do a lot of cleaning and polishing, which I get but can’t be avoided altogether when using heat in the process.

Anywho, where I was going with this…. This cool new arrival was intentionally made with a shiny and matte finish. The platinum is brushed and the 18k is polished, creating an interesting contrast directly in the design of the piece. Even the safety catch is interesting with one in platinum and the other in 18k. Details make a piece a standout, even in a more common curb link design. The length is good at 8” and easily shortened.

And the hallmarks are just so good.

If I were starting from scratch today, this is exactly where I’d begin.

I started collecting long before the advent of Instagram. And don’t get me wrong, I love and adore this sparkly online universe I get to share with you. But it can overwhelming and a bit unnerving to shop online, for anything- fine jewelry included and especially for a new or timid collector. I bet any newcomer has 50,000+ questions running through their mind on the topic. And you should!

And with that, here’s the best advice I can offer if you’re just getting started. ❤️✨🐀

My first piece of advice…Figure out what speaks to you and fits your lifestyle. We all love the Queens jewels but she still only wore that crown for special occasions. Special occasion jewels are great if you’ve got those on the calendar.

Otherwise, have a think about your day to day and what compliments those outfits. Because you want to wear and enjoy your jewelry! Safe deposit box patina doesn’t hit the same as that little nick added to that pendant when your horse gave you some serious kisses.

And also realize that your taste in jewelry will change. It’s ok, it happens to all of us! So it’s really important to pick something you love. For today. Because if you don’t love it today and you change your mind tomorrow, that piece may no longer bring the joy. Embrace those toe tingles when you see a piece you adore.

Next, shop in person as much as possible. Pawn shops, antique stores or festivals, jewelry shows. Get out there and look at what the market is offering. And, yes, you do want to see that original Art Deco bracelet that costs more than your car. It doesn’t matter that you may not buy it. Looking is free and it trains your eye to quality, craftsmanship and what actually looks amazing on you. Plus, you just may discover a new style or kind of jewelry that speaks to you that you’ve never seen before (hello dress clips!).

Plus, any seller worth buying jewelry from will tell you about the piece and share their knowledge. Be a curious sponge and soak it up.

What do you get when you stop saving the good stuff for special occasions? Thursday (and it matches the shirt) 🐆

Enameled leopard choker with diamond accents, layered with a diamond-set designer link collar, a curb watch chain and a charm stack: pavé PB bunny, lightning bolt, and a little gold revolver for good measure.

The watch chain and charms are PC. Leopard and CW necklace are available.
