Hours 10:00am - 5:00pm. The Ice Mine is a seasonal operation. We open every year on Memorial Day and close on Labor Day. The Coudersport Ice Mine was accidentally discovered in 1894 by Billy O'Neil while he was using a divining rod to try and locate a silver mine which was thought to be somewhere in Ice mountain. O'Neil started digging, he found layers of ice, not silver. In time, the digging cont

inued until the shaft was 10' long, 8 wide and some 30'deep. The Ice Mine is located in the side of a hill completely sheltered from the sun and wind. Ice begins to form in April and is usually melted by October. Edwin Swift Balch has described the Ice Mine as a true "glaciere naturelle" or natural refrigerator. He states that even though the Coudersport Ice Mine is small, it is the most impressive one known in the eastern United States.

Another chilly weekend in Potter County. Even so, we now have had visitors from twenty states and four countries for the season.

Thank you: CA, TX, LA, AL, FL, SC, NC, VA, WV, TN, OH, IN, PA, MD, DE, NJ, NY, MA, VT, and NH.

We have also had visitors from Canada, Austria, Germany, and Russia over our first two weeks.

Special congratulations to Samantha Perez who visited the Ice Mine from York, PA. She was celebrating an engagement and birthday.

Thank you Alana Hill from Jacksonville Beach, FL. (We'll hope for warmer outside weather for you next time - always cold inside.😃 )

And a final thank you to the Fultz Family from York, PA.

In lieu of ice pictures that will be available in real time on the Ice Mine later this week, we'll be posting random pictures from Ice Mountain during each week's summary for the remainder of the season.

ICE MINE WEBSITE AND CAMERAS

We had mentioned a few weeks ago that we are working our new Coudersport Ice Mine website. Included with the website will be real time external and internal temperature gauges.

Additionally, we have three live feed cameras on property. One at the front of the gift shop, a second overlooking the exterior of the ice mine, and a third camera placed at the bottom of the ice mine looking up from under the viewing platform. (This camera was installed last winter when there was no ice present.)

Linked below is the interior ice mine camera. We have the lights on currently and think this is a really neat view.

Thank you to Pecked By Birds and Griffin Hurt for all of your help with this project.

We hope to have the website released this week.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

GO SPRINGFIELD DELCO!

Today five of Springfield's finest, a crew staying at their camp in Wharton visited the Coudersport Ice Mine for the very first time. They were a great group to talk to and we had a lot of fun and laughs during their visit.

We asked them if they wanted their picture taken and if it would be ok for it to be posted to the Ice Mine page. They were informed that most group posts like this normally reach 75,000-100,000 views. They gave their permission and now we’re going to try and make this handsome group famous.

In lieu of their posted picture they guarantee one three things will happen:

1. At least one of the five will have their picture on the Jumbotron at Lincoln Financial Field wearing their Coudersport Ice Mine hat.

2. At least one of the five will get themselves on television during a Philadelphia Eagles game wearing their Coudersport Ice Mine hat.

3. They will get a current Philadelphia Eagle player to get their picture taken wearing a Coudersport Ice Mine hat.

Gentlemen, our followers and Ice Miniacs have faith in you. We know you can do it. We look forward to your spreading the story of the Coudersport Ice Mine in Delaware County and beyond.

Good luck and Go Birds!

ICE MOUNTAIN TRAIL & HISTORY WALK NOW OPEN

The Ice Mountain Trail & History Walk is now available to guests of the Coudersport Ice Mine.

The Ice Mountain Trail is a ½ mile hike that begins at the driveway entrance to the Coudersport Ice Mine. The trail stays on property and wanders along Mitchell Hollow before gradually heading up the mountain. Guests taking the trail travel through hardwood and coniferous forested areas then descend off Ice Mountain exiting directly at the Coudersport Ice Mine.

Along the trail we have signs highlighting the 126 year history of the property first opened to the public by John Dodd in 1901. The mountain is very picturesque. Visitors can expect to take about 15 minutes to walk the trail allowing additional time for pictures and history review.

Guests are encouraged to download the Merlin Bird ID app by Cornell Lab of Ornithology before their hike. This is a fantastic, free app that allows enthusiasts to identify birds by recording a singing bird or through photos. You will find there are numerous birds on Ice Mountain. (We'll put the Android and Apple links in the comments section.) This app is highly rated and recommended.

As this is a mountain trail with elevation changes, it is not recommended for very young children or guests with mobility issues. We also do not recommend taking the trail with open toe shoes.

There is no additional charge for guests who hike the Ice Mountain Trail during their visit to the Coudersport Ice Mine.

AFTERNOON RAINBOW

We caught this one this afternoon.

Finally got fog coming off of the ice this afternoon along with some much appreciated afternoon sunshine. Under the right conditions you get a rainbow effect above the mine.

Hopefully, we'll get some more of these conditions as we head into the summer months.

WEEK ONE - THANK YOU

Not the most optimal ice viewing days over this past Memorial Day weekend. On the mountain we had a high temperature of 42 degrees on Saturday and 54 degrees on Sunday with significant rain.

A genuine thank you to our hearty guests who visited. Even with the miserable conditions, the Coudersport Ice Mine had visitors from 12 states and 3 different countries over the weekend.

As of this today, the internal temperature of the mine sits at 31.3 degrees.

This picture was taken this afternoon from the viewing platform. The icicles in the photo are approximately 25' in length. You can also see the ice at the base of the mine and if you look through the icicles you can see the ice that is growing on the interior rock walls.

Forecast for Wed-Sun shows high temperatures in the low sixties to upper seventies with sunshine and a limited chance of rain.

The Ice Mine will be open from 10:00AM-5:00PM Wednesday through Sunday this week.
