There is a conversational pattern so consistent across every narcissistic relationship that it functions almost like a signature, a tell so reliable that once you recognize it you begin seeing it everywhere and understanding with new clarity exactly what it was designed to accomplish. Every discussion about the relationship, every retelling of what happened between you, every account they share with mutual friends or new audiences is edited with surgical precision to begin at the exact moment of your reaction and end before any context about what provoked that reaction ever enters the narrative. Your response exists in their version of events without the cause that created it, like a storm with no weather system, like smoke with no fire.
This is not accidental omission and it is not a different perspective on shared events, it is a deliberate and calculated editorial choice made by someone who understands that their behavior cannot survive honest examination and that your reaction without context can be made to look like the entire problem. They talk about your tears without mentioning what they said to produce them. They describe your anger without referencing the boundary they crossed that ignited it. They catalogue your breaking without acknowledging the sustained pressure they applied to engineer it. This selective storytelling is their most powerful tool because it creates a version of reality where they are permanently blameless and you are permanently unstable, a version that serves them completely and costs you everything including sometimes your own confidence in the accuracy of what you actually lived through and know to be absolutely true.
