OCTOBER 7 ~ FEAST OF THE HOLY ROSARY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

On October 7, 1571, two years after the Vatican urged that the Rosary be put into universal use, an event took place that caused the devotion to gain widespread popularity. One of the most famous naval battles in history took place that day in Lepanto Bay, off the coast of Greece. The opposing forces were Christian, composed of an alliance of fleets from Spain and Italy, against a far superior Turkish navy. The Muslim force threatened to take over the Mediterranean Sea and therefore be in a position to attack European countries. Pope Pius V asked the Christian faithful to pray the Rosary and seek the intercession of the Blessed Mother to defeat the Muslim navy.

Despite being outnumbered, the Christian fleet prevailed. Consequently, Pope Pius established October 7 as a feast of Our Lady of Victory, thus perpetually bringing honor to the Blessed Mother for her help. In 1573, Pope Gregory XIII (r. 1572-85) changed the name of the feast to Our Lady of the Rosary, a feast that the Church continues to celebrate to this day.

Our Lady won victory over Islam at the Battle of Lepanto on this day in 1571.

Pope Pius V called Christian Europe to pray the Rosary and the Islamic Ottoman invasion was stopped.

This miracle gave the Church the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

The Church celebrates in some way every aspect of the Divine Work – of creation, redemption, sanctification, and glorification. One aspect is the existence of spiritual creatures whom we call angels. The Church celebrates the Feast of the Guardian Angels on October 2.

All angels are in the presence of the Beatific Vision, worshipping God. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus said, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.”

Further, guardian angels help us throughout our lives. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches,

From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by [the angels’] watchful care and intercession. Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.

The angels help us in many ways, such as often protecting us from physical danger. More importantly, however, angels can help us in regard to sin. St. John Bosco said, “When tempted, invoke your angel. He is more eager to help you than you are to be helped! Ignore the devil and do not be afraid of him: he trembles and flees at the sight of your guardian angel.”

Also, angels help us at the end of our lives. St. Alphonsus Liguori said, “The powers of hell will assail the dying Christian, but his guardian angel will come to console him. His patrons, and St. Michael, who has been appointed by God to defend his faithful servants in their last combat with the devils, will come to his aid.”
