Saturday Spotlight: Dresden Green

Discovered in the 1700s, most likely in Golconda, India, the Dresden Green, which weighs roughly 40 carats, is the largest known gem-quality green diamond in the world. It is remarkable for its rich green color, which is even throughout the stone (many green diamonds are only green on the surface) and for being a Type IIa diamond. Type IIa diamonds are the most chemically pure. This means that this diamond was not colored by elements but completely by natural radiation

Tuesday Tidbit: A once-in-a-century find

Discovered in 1986 at the Premier Mine in South Africa, the Centenary rough weighed 599 carats and was later cut into a 273.85 carat D color stone. It was found with the help of an x-ray imaging system. Despite its incredible size, it is only the 3rd largest diamond to be discovered at the Premier Mine. It was named 'Centenary' to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. and the rough was unveiled at their Centennial Celebration in 1988
