Fiction: Only genuine pearls are gritty!

Not true! I’m afraid many a pearl strand has been thrown away or offered at a church bazaar for $1 because of this myth!

The gritty feeling comes from the nacre (or shiny) finish on pearls. Very precious pearls (especially South Seas pearls) have a nacre coating so fine that the gritty feel is often nearly indistinguishable (especially to a non-expert), while more reasonably priced freshwater pearls may have a much less fine coating and thus actually feel gritty.

Likewise, real pearls don’t “always feel cool to the touch.” Pearls are VERY hard to distinguish on your own, and we’ll be glad to look at any strands you have for free. Know what you own!

STORY: Young woman brought in her grandma’s jewelry and the family had mixed up her “real” pearls with some beautiful glass pearls. The “real” pearl strand was broken! We can restring and even match pearls if you are missing some.
