Terry Calhoun was born in Phoenix, spent time in southern California, and came to Colorado in the early seventies, a part of the hippie movement. She spent some time in Fraser, Evergreen, and Idaho Springs before landing in Lawson, Colorado. She is now retired and enjoys gardening and making jewelry.
“I have always created something, such as macramé`, crocheting, sewing, making dream catchers, or
working with furs, and other than initial sewing instructions from my mother, I am entirely self-taught.”
She played around with jewelry off and on while making the other crafts. It was not until the 90’s that she really got serious and left most of the other crafts behind. “I still make an occasional dream catcher, but devote most of my time in creating unique pieces of jewelry.” When asked about her designs, she says “they come from the stones most of the time. A stone can sit in my work area for years until it tells me what it wants to be.”
She works with gemstones and sterling silver, and readily admits turquoise is her favorite and most versatile stone. She blends colors no one would think about and creates small works of art. The main signature of her work would be the way the majority of the pieces are off centered, and only one of a kind. “Life is off center,” she says with a grin, “and I never have enjoyed repetition, so I never make the same thing twice.”
Her work can be found in Shadow Mountain Gallery in Evergreen, Colorado Mountain Art Gallery in Georgetown, Colorado, River Canyon Gallery in Bailey, Colorado and four different stores in Idaho Springs, CO.
