For everyone who believes there is more to science education than rockets and robots, I wanted to share instructions for a duct tape "electric rose" I invented with a teenager named Hana at the New York Maker Faire. Make magazine featured it for Valentine's Day. Happy Valentine's Day! http://makezine.com/2014/02/14/make-a-duct-tape-electric-rose/

A rose is a rose, unless it's duct tape, electric LED rose.

Here's a pic from my maker process on the train home from a meeting with Chicago Public Library. I was already ripping things apart and repurposing them. I thought of Maker Liz Neely who presented at DuPage Children's Museum and mentioned "making" as part of her traain ride and showed us her Tweet Dress, which she had already cannibalized for parts. Black duct tape bracelet with silver tape cut on a vinyl cutter, beginnings of a tiara for :alloween princesses (poster board cut with a vinyl cutter), and a dual duty purse/pencil case with one discreet little pink led in the middle of pink fireworks. Tuck the black duct tape straps inside to make it a pencil case. Leave them out and snap on a duct tape strap to make it a purse. Then, remember to thank all the folks at the Workshop 88 hacker space for amazing amounts of help. Thanks guys!

What a great range of inspiring stories from women in technology who span the range from no-fuss to frilly clothes and manicures. As a woman in computer science you could find yourself the only woman in a class of 120 students, many of whom have been coding since they were 12. So hooray for Maker Education for funding the e-textiles class to get 8-10-year-olds sewing microcontrollers and LEDs into blinky backpacks!
