I have been unexpectedly beyond upset over the passing of James Van Der Beek.

Dawson’s Creek was never just a TV show to me. It quietly became something that lived alongside my life for years.

I didn’t actually watch it when it first aired. I found it later, when I was around 22 and pregnant, during a time when life felt uncertain and overwhelming. I was also a few years younger than the characters themselves, but it was just perfect. It was my life and it was also…the life I had given up.

Since then, I’ve watched the reruns more times than I can count. I probably now know almost every line.

And Dawson himself — brought to life by James Van Der Beek — always felt sincere, thoughtful, and deeply human.
Following him on Instagram over the years, I was surprised at how similar he seemed in life to the beautiful character he played on screen.

Today is his birthday, and learning that he’s a Pisces somehow makes perfect sense. ♓️ Sensitive, introspective, emotional — the same energy that made Dawson the character he was.

I’ll also never forget the moment that hooked me- the end of the pilot episode, when I’ll Stand by You starts playing. Joey was upset and running to her boat to leave. Dawson yells out of his window : “usually in the morning! To !”

This Tik Tok vid I made a year-ish ago, though very imperfect, reminds me of days that I treasure. One of the best scenes in that series for me was when Dawson and Joey were lying on his bed toward the end and had completed filming his movie. “Today was a great day. How many truly great days do we get?”
