Some of the best hallmarks I find are the ones an estate auction never saw, and this ring had one hiding under a coat of black tarnish. The head and most of the twisted shank had gone nearly black, covering the 925 and the three small letters stamped beside it, so with nothing readable to go on, it sold for melt. Those letters are ALE, the hallmark Pandora uses on its genuine silver, named after Algot Enevoldsen, the father of founder Per Enevoldsen. This is Pandora's retired mother of pearl twist rope ring, style 190828MP, and with shell that soft it only got short, gentle runs in the ultrasonic cleaner to lift the black out of the twists. Restored and identified, a melt lot turned out to be a great brand name estate find.

A New York City auction grouped these heavyweight vintage rings into a trade lot, the kind of listing built for jewelry professionals who know how to restore soft stones without ruining them. Every ring here pairs solid weight with delicate stones like mother of pearl, moonstone, and turquoise, and that combination makes restoration a real risk. Mother of pearl sits around 3.5 on the Mohs scale and can flake, turquoise is porous and soaks up whatever it is cleaned with, and moonstone has internal cleavage that can crack under the wrong cleaning. Anyone can bid on a trade lot, but it is aimed at people with the tools and patience to bring pieces like these back. Short, careful runs in the ultrasonic cleaner and gentle hand work brought each ring back without losing a single stone.

This estate auction sold its silver strictly by weight, with no cleaning and no stone testing, which is the easiest way to end up with broken jewelry and plastic costume stones. With bidding experience and a reliable outlet for melt, though, the broken pieces go to the refinery and the good estate finds get restored to like new. This one sits in a six prong head with a stone too dirty to test on its own, but once the ultrasonic cleaner cleared the buildup, it came back as a genuine black tourmaline estate ring.

Estate auctions get nervous around soft stones like opal and moonstone. They damage easily with the usual cleaning methods, whether that's an ultrasonic, a rotary wheel, or a strong polish, so pushing a piece like this toward melt looks like the smart move. Scrappers and refineries are going to destroy it anyway, so condition and wear never even come into play. But this is moonstone set in hand finished scrollwork, and even as a vintage piece it will likely outlast most jewelry made today. Cleaned up, it's worth far more than melt.

They moved fast on silver at this estate auction. One glance at the color shift and it was listed as "opal like," which left most bidders doubting the stone and writing it off as costume. What they overlooked was the scrollwork framing an east west marquise cut stone, a style that sells for far more than melt. That opal like stone is actually mother of pearl, and the pink and green flash points to a higher grade shell. Restored and hallmarked, it turned out to be a great estate find.

An auction house listed this moonstone pendant with a cloudy stone, yellow tarnish, and no markings, and that kept most bidders away. There's a faded 925 on the back, so calling it unmarked was probably the auction playing it safe. Moonstone is delicate and hard to clean in an ultrasonic, but restored and properly identified, it's a solid estate find.

The estate auction showed the photos and listed it by weight, as is, no returns, with deep silver sulfide tarnish packed into every crevice of the scrolls. Polishing alone can't reach that far in, and even without stones or prongs to work around, a ring like this is a tough one to restore. The style is Etruscan Revival, a hand finished scroll dome frame with beaded granulation and twisted rope wire, not a quick mass produced piece. After several rounds of polishing, the ultrasonic cleaner and compound, it came back like new, with a faded 925 marking on the back. A great estate find.

The estate auction had a DXL tester on hand and still couldn't confirm this handmade ring as 925, because someone had added a fake gold band that threw the metal reading toward gold plated, unknown, or heavy brass and copper. With the hallmark buried under tarnish, the listing gave full disclosure of the DXL results and possible gold plating, and paired with an unknown stone, most bidders wrote it off as costume jewelry. Under it all is solid sterling silver with a moonstone rising over a mountain range, and the details give away who made it: hand cut overlays soldered onto the band, an uneven bezel, small pits, and oxidized recesses, the work of a bench jeweler, not a casting or a cheap factory line.

The estate auction moved fast on this one and listed it as a plastic or resin ring, leaving most bidders to write it off as a costume stone. A few details they missed put it well above melt. The uneven beads and intentional oxidation around the bezel tell you it was made by hand, and the uneven color with rounded darker zones inside is exactly how carnelian's color sits naturally. Put those together and you have a vintage handmade Southwest gemstone estate ring, and a great auction find.

Estate auction listed this heavy vintage statement ring as unmarked and probably glass, then pushed it for melt over the deep tarnish, when a clear 925 hallmark was most likely buried under that tarnish the whole time. The stone isn't a gemstone, but it isn't glass or plastic either. It's AAA high grade CZ with crisp facets and strong fire, not the cheap glassy kind. On its own the CZ carries no real value, but bezel set east west in a heavy sterling band with that 90s modernist look, this ring still holds real estate value.
