Natural vs Synthetic (Laboratory-Grown) Diamonds

This is a previous post that we feel bears repeating being Valentines Day.

Synthetic or lab grown diamonds are becoming more accepted by consumers and retailers. They have the same chemical, physical and optical properties as a natural mined diamond. Even though they are grown in a lab, synthetic diamonds are currently valued at about 40% lower than natural. That is due to the lower cost in creating diamonds in a laboratory environment.

Synthetic diamonds can come in a variety of shapes, colors and clarity's and there are increasingly more companies starting to produce. One such organization is DeBeers, under the name of Lightbox Jewelry. They plan on marketing their synthetic diamond items as fashion jewelry.

At Accredited Jewelry Appraisers, LLC, we are able to screen for synthetic or laboratory diamonds versus natural diamond. If you have any concerns, call to make an appointment to see us at our lab in Falls Church, VA. We serve the Washington metropolitan area.

Gold Mining

Gold mining involves more than just panning for gold or sluicing. Another method is hard rock mining where a pit or shaft is dug to follow a gold vein that is excavated by the miners and carried to the surface. At that point, there might be a heavy concentrate of minerals that include gold which needs to be separated out. One way is to use liquid mercury which adheres to the gold, and the minerals are then washed away. Once the gold/mercury mixture is heated, then the mercury vaporizes leaving the gold behind.
This practice can leave some undesirable effects such as it being highly toxic to humans, animals and the environment. Right now, there is a push to rectify the problem through social media and incentivizing scientists, engineers and innovators to discover a safe, highly effective, affordable and scalable replacement for mercury.

Time to Clean Out Your Jewelry Box?

Maybe it's time to dispose of those items you don't wear or like. What can you do with it? Here's some options:

-Take your fine jewelry around to several different jewelry stores that buy and go with the highest bidder! This is not the most profitable but can net some cash in a pinch.

-Try putting your items with a store that will put them on consignment. Make sure the store has a market for your pieces, ask about advertising and make sure the store has a viable inventory system.

-Sell directly to a friend or family member. In order to come up with a fair price, you may need a fair market appraisal.

-Auction is always an option; either do it yourself on E bay or other auction sites. Be aware of any and all fees you might be charged even if your items do not sell.

Good luck! If you have any questions, contact Accredited Jewelry Appraisers for help!
