The monarch butterfly’s fall migration is underway—and its journey carries generations of Indigenous cultural meaning.

Each fall, eastern monarchs begin an extraordinary journey of up to 3,000 miles, traveling from Canada and the northern United States toward the oyamel forests of central Mexico.

For Indigenous peoples of the region, their arrival has long meant more than migration. Purépecha traditions connect monarchs with departed ancestors, while Mazahua and Otomí traditions associate their arrival with agricultural cycles and call the monarch “the harvester.”

Indigenous stewardship also supports monarch habitat farther north. Native-led pollinator initiatives involving multiple Tribal Nations have worked to restore habitat for monarchs and other pollinators.

The journey connects landscapes across three countries—and depends on habitat throughout the route.
