My art is Political, I am political, and art has always BEEN political.
Earlier this year, I was awarded a grant from which I then used to purchase two brand new sewing machines. This was a huge step for me as an artist- I had only ever been using older secondhand machines, and had to come to a bit of a stop on here due to constant machine repairs. I am so so so grateful for this opportunity, it has definitely made a huge difference in not only my creative process but also in how I want to approach my art going forward.
As many of you may know, GCAC had their funding cut in July of this past year, thus halting the grant program for the foreseeable future. I want to make it abundantly clear that COLUMBUS NEEDS ART! Everywhere needs art. People need FREE art. Art is what makes cities and communities thrive, and without strong support for the artists in said community, these communities are sure to suffer. A very big shame on the city for cutting funding here and many other places where it is so desperately needed.
As a Columbus native, I know the arts scene will never die, even with such drastic cuts taken to our programs. Columbus can try to put up as many empty high rise apartments as they want, but those impossible studio rent prices, artificial artists using fake mediums with only dollar signs for eyes- the arts community sees right through that and we keep creating because we have no choice.
The entire ethos of Daydream Junk was founded upon the belief that we already have enough quality clothes, fabrics, and materials on this planet and it’s our job to turn those existing items into something new and fresh. I don’t want to peddle junk ( that is the no 1 reason I stopped making resin stuff LOL) & I have big plans for the coming years on how I plan to further give back to the community, including hosting free sewing and mending workshops as well as SPEAKING MY MIND! Art is political, people are political, and I will never not be vocal about that.
Thank you again to you’re doing essential work. Thank you for helping artists all over our city. I hope one day to see the grant program flourish again like never before!
