I remember my first time coming across a Reconnaissance Marine who wasn’t my father. Multiple Purple Hearts from his time in Vietnam and ran the small indoor shooting range that would become a second home as a teenager. The next time would be at assessment and selection. Josh and C**t ended up in the rack next to me and Sheperty on my A&S team. Not really allowed to talk about your personal life, MOS, rank and really anything. You could notice the holes above the left breast pocket that both had jump wings and a dive bubble. Insert complete. Dual cool, the only guys that really stood apart from every other Marine. Difficult to understand at the time if they were ma*****st or just had a pain threshold that was pushed so many times that they just didn’t have one. Each one of the quietly completing tasks at the top of the class. When returning from navigation you would find the Reconnaissance Marines already finishing up a nap back at the barracks. At the same time, all those I worked with had a unique level of confidence and humility that was entertaining to watch. C**t coming in at 17min 3 mile run for our A&S PFT and talking about what could be improved on for the next time. These guys looked internally for continuous improvement. The end of selection resulted in 25 out of about 120 people being selected for that class. I really didn’t understand the community that I was joining, even as I was surrounded by them and eating dinner listening to them. MARSOC would be built on the backs of men that would always push the standards. Gentlemen, this the Recondo. We’re opening it up for another round on the 15th. Those interested, please submit your BRC certs.
