What do all those little dials on a chronograph actually do?

AbyssForce’s dial is easy to read once you know it: one sub-dial counts chronograph minutes, one shows the 24-hour time, one shows running seconds, and the outer ring measures speed. It’s a Seiko VK63 meca-quartz dive chronograph with sapphire and a 500m rating, for $199.

Plenty of guys own a chronograph and only ever read the hour and minute hands. The rest of the dial is just decoration to them, three small circles and a ring of numbers they’ve never figured out. Here’s the quick guide. 🔍

Here’s what’s on the AbyssForce dial:

The big hands and the running seconds. The hour and minute hands tell the time. The small running-seconds sub-dial ticks constantly, so you can see the watch is running. The large center seconds hand stays parked at 12 until you start the chronograph.
The chronograph: the center hand plus the 60-minute counter. Press the top pusher and the center seconds hand sweeps around. Each full lap advances the 60-minute counter by one minute, so you can time anything up to an hour. Press the top pusher again to stop, and press the bottom pusher to snap both hands back to zero. That crisp snap comes from the VK63’s mechanical chronograph module.
The 24-hour sub-dial, the date, and the tachymeter. The 24-hour sub-dial tells you whether it’s AM or PM, which is handy after a red-eye flight or a long night shift. The date sits at 6 o’clock. The tachymeter on the outer ring turns the chronograph into a speed calculator: time one mile and read your speed off the scale.

Once you know the layout, every element on the dial earns its place, and it’s all protected by anti-reflective sapphire and backed by a 500m rating with screw-down pushers. The case is 48mm, solid 316L steel, and 270g, best on wrists 7 inches and up.

It comes in blue, white, or grey, with a 12-month warranty, 30-day returns, and free tracked shipping over $100.

Know your dial. Use your dial. ⏱️

Tired of every watch being round?

AbyssRift breaks the pattern with a 49mm square cushion case and an internal dive bezel, a retro tool-watch shape on a Japanese Miyota 8215 automatic with sapphire crystal and solid 316L steel, for $179.

Look at most watch boxes and it’s circle after circle: round case, round bezel, round everything. Back in the ’60s and ’70s, some of the boldest dive watches broke that mold with cushion cases and bezels tucked inside the crystal. That shape still stands out today, because almost nobody makes it at this price. ◼️

Here’s what the square case gives you:

A shape people notice. The 49mm cushion case looks unlike anything else on most wrists. It has a technical, retro tool-watch character, with a red seconds hand and a date at 3 o’clock. It’s a deliberate statement watch for guys who like big pieces. If you usually wear under 42mm, it will feel large.
A bezel that stays protected. The timing ring sits inside the sapphire crystal and turns with a second crown, so it can’t get knocked or scratched the way an outer bezel does. Line it up with the minute hand to time anything.
A real automatic inside. The Japanese Miyota 8215 winds itself as you wear it, can be hand-wound, and holds about 40 hours of reserve with no battery, ever. One honest note: the seconds hand keeps running while you set the time, which is normal for this movement. The solid 316L steel case is 15mm thick and 180g, rated to 100m for swimming when both crowns are screwed down.

The result is a dive watch that breaks the round-watch rut and has the specs to back it up.

It comes in black, blue, or green on a wide 26mm silicone strap built for larger wrists. 12-month warranty, 30-day returns, and free tracked shipping over $100.

What should your first chronograph be?

Something simple, solid, and honest. AbyssStorm is a Seiko/TMI VD53 quartz chronograph with sapphire crystal, a solid 316L steel case and bracelet, and 100m water resistance, the easiest way into a real sapphire chronograph at $169.

Your first chronograph shouldn’t be complicated. You want to learn what the pushers do, actually use the stopwatch, and wear it every day without worrying about winding, servicing, or scratching the dial in the first month. ⏱️

Here’s why AbyssStorm makes a good first chronograph:

Easy to learn and easy to live with. Press the top pusher to start and stop, and the bottom pusher to reset. It has a 60-minute counter, small running seconds, a 24-hour sub-dial, a date window, and a tachymeter on the chapter ring. The Japanese quartz battery lasts about 2 to 3 years, so there’s nothing to wind.
Sapphire from day one. A first watch gets knocked around. AbyssStorm’s sapphire crystal resists the everyday scratches that turn mineral glass hazy, so the sub-dials stay clear and readable.
Real steel and an honest water rating. The solid 316L steel case and bracelet are 46mm across, 14mm thick, and 217g, with a folding safety clasp, a unidirectional dive bezel, and luminous hands and markers. It’s rated to 100m, which is fine for swimming and rain. The crown is push-pull, so keep it pushed in near water and don’t run the chronograph underwater.

The result is a chronograph you’ll learn quickly, use every day, and keep looking sharp without spending a lot.

It comes in blue, gray, green, or white, and suits larger wrists. 12-month warranty, 30-day returns, and free tracked shipping over $100.

Just got your first automatic watch? Here’s how to set it up on day one.

AbyssPro takes about two minutes to set up: wind the Seiko NH35 by hand, set the date and time, and screw the crown down. After that, it winds itself as you wear it, with no battery, ever. It’s a 1000m automatic diver for $199.

A new automatic can feel intimidating out of the box. There’s no battery tab to pull, the crown has more than one position, and you don’t want to break something on day one. It’s simpler than it looks. 🔧

Here’s the setup:

Unscrew the crown and give it a wind. Turn the crown counterclockwise until it pops out to the first position. Wind it clockwise about 20 to 30 turns to build up a starting charge. The NH35 hand-winds, so this gets it running right away.
Set the date, then the time. Pull the crown to the middle position to set the date. One tip: avoid changing the date late in the evening or early in the morning, when the date mechanism is already moving on its own. Set the hands to around 6 o’clock first, then adjust the date. Next, pull the crown all the way out. The seconds hand stops, since the NH35 hacks, so you can set the time precisely. Push it back in and the watch starts running.
Screw the crown down, every time. Push the crown in and turn it clockwise until it’s snug. This is what seals the case for its 1000m / 100 BAR rating. Make it a habit before any water contact.

That’s it. Wear it daily and your wrist keeps it wound, with about a 41-hour reserve. If it sits over a long weekend and stops, repeat step one.

The rest of the watch is just as simple to live with: a 46mm steel case, 17mm thick and 269g, a rotating dive bezel, full lume, and a mineral crystal we list honestly. That’s the trade-off that keeps a 1000m automatic at $199.

It comes in blue, orange, red-blue, or white, and it’s best on wrists 7 inches and up. 12-month warranty, 30-day returns, and free tracked shipping over $100.

Wind it once. Wear it forever. 🔩

Can one dive chronograph look like three different watches?

Yes. AbyssForce has standard 24mm lugs, so you can swap its solid steel bracelet for rubber or a fabric strap in minutes and change the whole look. It’s a Seiko VK63 meca-quartz with sapphire and a 500m rating, for $199.

Most guys own one good watch and wear it the same way every day. The steel bracelet looks great at the office, but it’s not ideal for a beach weekend or a summer workout. Instead of buying another watch, change the strap. 🔄

Here’s how to get three looks from one AbyssForce:

Steel bracelet, for the week. It arrives on a solid 316L steel bracelet with no hollow links and a signed folding safety clasp. It’s the heaviest and most polished look, right for work, dinner, and anywhere you want the watch to carry some weight.
Rubber strap, for water and the gym. Swap to a 24mm rubber strap and AbyssForce turns into a pure sport watch. It’s lighter, cooler in the heat, and sweat-friendly. With the screw-down pushers and crown, the 500m rating doesn’t change, so it’s ready for the pool, the ocean, and summer.
Fabric strap, for the weekend. A 24mm fabric or NATO-style strap gives it a relaxed, rugged look that pairs well with denim and a flannel. Fabric straps are inexpensive, so you can pick up a couple of colors to match your dial.

Because 24mm is a standard width, aftermarket straps are easy to find, and most swap with a simple spring-bar tool. Extra straps aren’t included and are sold separately, but they typically cost far less than a second watch.

Underneath every look, it’s the same watch: a Seiko VK63 meca-quartz accurate to ±20 seconds a month, anti-reflective sapphire, a 500m rating, and a 48mm case that’s 14mm thick. It’s best on wrists 7 inches and up.

It comes in blue, white, or grey, with a 12-month warranty, 30-day returns, and free tracked shipping over $100.

Can you actually read your watch in bright sun or total darkness?

AbyssForce is built to be read anywhere: anti-reflective sapphire cuts glare in sun and water, and luminous hands and markers stay readable after dark. It’s on a Seiko VK63 meca-quartz dive chronograph with a 500m rating, for $199.

You tilt your wrist at noon and see your own reflection instead of the time. At night it’s the opposite problem, and you’re squinting at a dark dial. A busy chronograph dial with sub-dials makes both worse, since there’s more to read and more for glare to wash out. ☀️🌙

Here’s how AbyssForce stays readable:

In bright sun: anti-reflective sapphire. The sapphire crystal has an anti-reflective coating that cuts glare in direct sun, on the water, and under office lights. You see the dial instead of the sky. The sapphire also resists scratches, so the view doesn’t haze over with daily wear.
In the dark: full lume. The hands and hour markers are luminous, so you can read the time on a night drive, in a dark room, or under the surface. Charge it under a light and it glows when the lights go down.
At a glance: a dial laid out to be read. It has 60-minute, 24-hour, and running seconds sub-dials, a date at 6 o’clock for a symmetrical layout, and a tachymeter on the chapter ring. Everything has its place, so you’re not hunting for the information you need.

Behind all that, the Seiko VK63 is accurate to ±20 seconds a month with a crisp mechanical snap-back reset. The screw-down pushers and crown hold 500m, and the solid 316L steel case and bracelet are 48mm across, 14mm thick, and 270g. It’s best on wrists 7 inches and up.

The result is a watch you can read in a single glance, whether you’re on a sunny beach or out at midnight.

It comes in blue, white, or grey, with a 12-month warranty, 30-day returns, and free tracked shipping over $100.

What’s a good watch gift for a dad who likes things built the old way?

AbyssHeritage is a vintage-style dive watch with real substance: a self-winding Japanese mechanical movement, sapphire crystal, a 316L steel case, and a 500m rating, available in a warm brown dial, for $179.

Some dads don’t want a smartwatch. They don’t want to charge anything, sync anything, or learn an app. They want a watch like the ones they grew up around, heavy, mechanical, and built to last, the kind that looks right with a leather jacket and a cup of coffee on the porch. 🤎

Here’s why AbyssHeritage fits that kind of dad:

It runs the old way. A self-winding Japanese mechanical movement is powered by the motion of his wrist. There’s no battery and no charger. He wears it and it keeps going, with an auto date and a classic three-hand dial.
It looks like a watch with a story. The brown dial is a nod to vintage saturation dive watches, a warmer look that most modern divers skip. It also comes in black or blue if he’s more traditional. It pairs naturally with leather, denim, and flannel.
It’s built to be handed down. Sapphire crystal resists everyday scratches, the solid 316L steel case is shock-resistant, and the 500m rating means he never has to take it off near water. It’s a watch he can wear hard for years.

One honest note for gift buyers: at 47.5mm across and 20mm thick, AbyssHeritage is a big, heavy watch. It’s perfect for a dad with a larger wrist who likes real weight. If he usually wears small watches, check his wrist size first, or use the 30-day return window if the fit isn’t right.

The result is a gift that feels like it belongs on his wrist, not in a drawer with last year’s gadget.

12-month warranty, 30-day returns, and free tracked shipping over $100.

Built the old way. 🤎

TitanPro or AbyssChrono: which titanium dive watch should you get?

Choose TitanPro ($199) for a self-winding Seiko NH36 automatic with day-date on a silicone strap. Choose AbyssChrono ($219) for a Seiko VK63 meca-quartz chronograph on a titanium bracelet. Both are 43mm titanium divers with sapphire and a 300m rating.

Same case size, same water rating, same lightweight titanium, $20 apart. Most guys stall here because the two watches look so close on paper. The real difference comes down to one question: do you want an automatic or a chronograph? 🔩

Here’s the honest split:

Movement: automatic vs chronograph. TitanPro runs a Seiko NH36 automatic. It winds itself as you wear it, shows the day and date, can be hand-wound, and has about a 40-hour reserve with no battery, ever. AbyssChrono runs a Seiko VK63 meca-quartz with a working chronograph, quartz accuracy to ±20 seconds a month, and a crisp snap-back reset. Choose TitanPro if you want a mechanical watch with a clean dial. Choose AbyssChrono if you actually time things.
On the wrist: silicone strap vs titanium bracelet. TitanPro comes on a soft silicone strap, which is sweat-friendly, water-friendly, and ideal for the gym and the beach. At 11mm thick, it’s the slimmer of the two. AbyssChrono comes on a titanium bracelet with a double-push clasp. It’s 12mm thick and dresses up more easily for the office.
Details: both are built for water. Both have sapphire crystal, a ceramic bezel insert, and a screw-down crown rated to 300m. AbyssChrono adds screw-down pushers, so the chronograph stays sealed in the water, plus Super-LumiNova BGW9 lume. TitanPro comes in black, blue, or orange. AbyssChrono comes in Stealth Black, Pacific Blue, or Sunset Orange.

The bottom line: if you want an automatic you never have to charge or wind, go TitanPro. If you want a stopwatch on your wrist and a bracelet that works in the office, go AbyssChrono.

Both come with a 12-month warranty, 30-day returns, and free tracked shipping over $100.

AbyssPro or AbyssHeritage: which automatic dive watch should you get?

Choose AbyssPro ($199) for a 1000m rating and a named Seiko NH35 automatic. Choose AbyssHeritage ($179) for sapphire crystal, a 500m rating, and a vintage-style dial. Both are big, self-winding steel divers with no battery.

Two automatic divers, both built big, $20 apart. Neither one is simply better. Each wins on different things, and the right pick depends on what you care about most. Here’s the straight comparison. ⌚

Crystal: AbyssHeritage wins. AbyssHeritage has sapphire crystal. AbyssPro has mineral crystal, and we say so plainly. If you’re hard on watches around concrete, tools, or rough surfaces, or you want a crystal that stays spotless for years, that’s a real point for AbyssHeritage.
Water and movement: AbyssPro wins. AbyssPro is rated to 1000m / 100 BAR, double AbyssHeritage’s 500m, and its case is built to a tougher standard. It also runs a named Seiko NH35, a proven, widely serviced caliber you can look up, with about a 41-hour reserve. AbyssHeritage uses a self-winding Japanese mechanical movement whose caliber isn’t named on the page. If you want the most overbuilt case and a movement you can look up, go AbyssPro.
Size and style: both are big, in different ways. AbyssPro is 46mm across, 17mm thick, and 269g, a classic tool diver in blue, orange, red-blue, or white. AbyssHeritage is 47.5mm and 20mm thick, even bigger and taller, in black, blue, or a vintage brown that most diver lineups skip. Both are best on wrists 7 inches and up.

The bottom line: if you want the toughest case and a Seiko movement, get AbyssPro. If you want sapphire, vintage character, and to save $20, get AbyssHeritage.

Both come with a 12-month warranty, 30-day returns, and free tracked shipping over $100.

Two automatics. Pick your strengths. 🔩
