Ellis Tanner is the most trusted trader among the Navajo (Diné) people. He established Ellis Tanner Trading Company in 1967 which makes him the longest original trader in Gallup, NM. At Ellis Tanner Trading Company, you can find a quality selection of authentic and vintage Native American Jewelry. ade jewelry for all occasions. Also, as a long time supporter and "In-law" of the Navajo people, Ellis Tanner Trading Company has a bookstore featuring Navajo and Native American authors; CDs of local music artists; an assortment of ceremonial herbs and Yucca shampoos; and large pots and pans perfect for ceremonies or cooking for large gathering. Lastly, come see the Circe of Light Murals painted by Chester Kahn that adorn the walls of Ellis Tanner Trading Company. His great-grandfather, Seth Tanner, came West with Brigham Young and helped settle this area. The Navajos gave him a name which is an honor. They called him ''Hosteen Shush'' which means ''Mr. Bear''. Ellis Tanner's grandfather, Joseph Baldwin Tanner, was also honored with Navajo name; he was called ''Shush Yaz'' which means ''Little Bear''. He was a highly respected trader and a very good friend of Chee Dodge, the first Chairman of the Navajo Tribal Council. Joseph Baldwin Tanner played a major role in helping the Navajo leaders form the first Tribal Council. Ellis Tanner's parents, Rule Levi and Stella Tanner, were well respected traders and they had stores in many different areas of the reservation.
