: Potatoes Evolved From Tomatoes

A new study from a team at the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences has traced the origins of the modern potato to a crossbreeding event with a tomato plant, which occurred around 9 million years ago in the South America's Andes mountains. Evolutionary biologists and genomic scientists analyzed 450 genomes from both cultivated and wild potato species.

The results revealed that an ancient ancestor of the wild tomato plant naturally bred with a plant called Etuberosum, the precursor to the modern potato. This new hybrid had the ability to grow tubers - the enlarged, edible part of the plant which grow underground, unlike tomatoes or Etuberosums. The study also decoded which genes were supplied by each ancient plant to create the new tuber-producer. This understanding could help scientists breed potatoes more resistant to disease and climate change in the future.

This map depicts the geographic distribution of Petota (Potato) (golden dots), Tomato (red dots), and Etuberosum (blue dots), based on verified georeferenced collection records.

Our first blackberry harvest! 🫐

It's taken a few years to get her going but this plant has survived 3 transplants! It's a thornless blackberry and I'm excited to add her to the farm.

I had an idea for cocktails in the garden... 🌱

Would anyone be interested? Lol

The idea was cocktails or drinks that went with things grown in the garden. And maybe some snacks. Who knows. 😝

Let me know in the comments! This is a Mai Tai using mint from my garden. 😊

My Husbands Mai Tai 🍹

1 oz Orgeat5 oz Dry Curacao
1 oz Lime Juice
1 oz Plantation Rum
1 oz Bacardi Silver

Add ice and shake.
Pour into glass.
Garnish with a mint sprig.

Enjoy!

The Egyptian Walking onions are going crazy! πŸ§…

I know I haven't been posting regularly but I want to change that!

If you have chronic illness, you may understand. If not, you probably don't! But gardening is gardening and I love it so I hope you'll stick with me. 😁

I've never done this before, but we'll see if they take it!

And here we go! We've got leaves budding out on both Asian pear cuttings! 🍐

I'm excited to add more fruit trees to the farm, and I look forward to figuring out just where to add these when they are ready to go outdoors!

I took a cutting from a friend's "Pear Apple" tree (I Found its an asian pear) and it's rooting! (Read on to learn how I did it) Well, THEY are rooting. I cut the first cutting in half to make two.

He let me have some fruit this past summer and I loved it. I have no idea what variety it is, and I'm sure he doesn't know either because it was planted by his home's previous owner. He's been there a while now and it's out in Sapulpa by a creek. His place is lovely and I'm really sort of jealous 😝.

How to Take a Cutting from a Fruit Tree:
I've done this with 2 mulberry trees and now this asian pear.

1) take a cutting as long as from the crease of your wrist to your elbow in the early spring.

2) cut off all the leaves. I KNOW. This is hard. But do it so the stick wants to make roots.

3) I've used rooting hormone powder and I haven't. Both ways work. If you're using it, dip the end in your powder then tap off the excess.

4) Get some potting soil thats damp and make a hole with a pencil (or another stick) and plunge your baby tree into that hole and push the soil around it.
-I used a pot and put it into a gallon freezer bag and sealed around the baby tree to keep everything moist.

5) now put it somewhere that doesn't get a whole lot of light. And leave it alone. For a month. It's hard! But leave it alone!

Then you'll end up with sticks that eventually start to grow leaves... like mine. ❀️

I'll give another update when I've got more growth!
