Ancient Arborist

Ancient Arborist Arborist, Artist, Sculptor, Sawyer, Urban harvest wood dealer Ancient Arborist is my all encompassing tree/ human interface company. Planting, trimming, removal.

Freeform abstract woodcarvings, I prefer to make things that are used in everyday life. Bowls, plates, serving utensils, canes, walking sticks, and water features. I love hunting the hidden treasures in every tree, from revealing the living beauty of the largest plants on earth by trimming or harvesting interesting grain patterns in the trees I remove.

I love how modular this machine is. Lucasmill, you’re definitely my kind of designers. Changes from slabber head to planer head in less than 30 minutes. And that was the time it took for my apprentice to do it for the first time.

Siberian elm with some very nice grain. This slab is the same size as a single bed mattress. Oh and it was standing tree last week. Stereotypical urban hardwood. There’s hidden beauty all around your city and this is proof. Buy local, always 😎

So I’m back in the milling game and I just wanted to share this latest gem from the log deck. This one was a joy to mill. Color, figure and an excellent size IMO. Average 48” wide by 63” long, milled to a generous 3.5” these slabs will make some very beautiful LE coffee tables, or some very impressive monolithic circles of 46-48” or better yet a 47”x 58” ovals. Oh and shoutout to Lukas Mill for making such a capable slabbing mill. After decades of wrestling with an Alaskan mill the Lukas Mill is a cinch to operate with predictable, repeatable cuts. This log joins a large ash, a modest silver maple, some decent sized elm and some very interesting spruce into the container 😎

The first peach blossom I’ve seen this year. So delicate, so much potential. I love spring and the promise of potential that it brings.

This is how all of my carvings and sculptures begin. With me in the top of the tree, as I remove it from some persons yard someplace in this beautiful city of ours. As an artist, part of my process is to have the closest possible connection to my materials and their origins. So, as I am pruning or removing trees I see I’m also evaluating the merits of the materials for use in my art. I’m fairly passionate about this and enjoy the process. By the way, I’m 35’ up in this tree when I took this pic. Don’t worry, I’m in a fully rigged harness and secured by two different anchor points when I’m taking this pic. I also removed my helmet ⛑ just for the pic. Happy days everyone 😀

It’s that time of year again. I love, and work all things tree. Including, oddly enough the leaf clean up. It’s a physical archive of the trees work for the season. Each leaf unique, but still clearly recognizable as from a particular tree. As I gather leaves my mind does a rough count of my history here. 20 years in, I’m way over the 500 mark for large yard leaf clean ups. I’ve learned a few things along the way, one is to skip the piles and rake leaves into a big row. Collection for loading is much easier this way. Stay safe and love your trees, even as they rain more work onto you 🤗

Texture on the live edge. Leaf/vine motif, full wrap in effect. This is the third of four sides, I’m on the final turn 😅
