Unlike lighter opals, black opals have a dark body tone that creates dramatic contrast and makes their flashes of green, blue, orange, and red appear especially vivid. The term black opal refers to the stone’s dark background—not necessarily a completely black stone.
Fine black opals are among the rarest and most prized varieties of precious opal, with Australia—particularly Lightning Ridge—famous for producing exceptional examples.
