Happy June! Hillsdale Jeweler's fave month, not only because of its 3+ unique birthstones, but also because all 3 HJ employees are June babies!
First let's take a look at the amazing alexandrite. The stone was named after Russia’s Prince Alexander II because the stone was discovered on his birthday in the Ural Mountains. Natural alexandrite is rarer and more expensive than diamonds, with top-quality stones costing more than $30,000 per carat. You'll almost never see it set in jewelry because of the price, so lab-created alexandrite is used instead. Alexandrite's unique feature is that it changes color, shining green in daylight and deep purple/red in artificial light. Even though this gemstone doesn't have a very long history, it has been strongly associated with good fortune and is said to enhance creativity and focus. Alexandrite was first found in Russia but is now mined in parts of Africa, Brazil, and Sri Lanka, although the gem is still extremely rare.
