Frankfort Green is a stone-like slag byproduct left over from iron ore smelting along the shores of Northern Michigan in the 19th century, it is closely related to the famous Leland Blue.

Foundries across the region created steel in northern lower Michigan and U.P. locations. Before worries about pollution, the remnants were often dumped into nearby Lake Michigan.

The differences in color between Frankfort Green and Leland Blue were caused by the varying temperatures used to create different hardnesses of steel.
