Harry Haslett left the country and took 6 years to travel around the world with only a backpack and a surfboard 25 years ago. At the end of his journey he brought back some beautiful hand carved wooden jewelry from a village in the mountains of Bali and began to sell these treasures to surf shops in America. Out of the back of his grand father's old Chevy he traveled the coasts to begin his business. He found small specialty boutiques that were also fascinated with his art. While traveling, his mother Henrietta shipped to customers, from her living room and basement with the help of family, friends and neighbors. The handicrafts were well received; and with trusting Balinese craftspeople to believe in him, his humble business began. Now many years and exotic countries later the business has developed organically into a multi-line accessory company located in Hawthorne, New York. Harry is the head designer and president of the company which has grown to include a continual array of unique jewelry (Island Designs by Harry Haslett) and handbags & scarves (Christian Livingston Collection). The company exhibits in the major gift and accessories shows in New York, Atlanta, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Chicago, as well as in showrooms throughout the United States. From these modest roots we have always stayed true to our focus of taking care of our customers and employees, who are like our extended family. Harry still travels the globe designing and looking for inspiration in back alley shops and markets in remote locations while still managing to sneak in a surf whenever possible. We welcome you to experience our designs and found treasures and to join our growing family of friends and like minded souls!

With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of our
beloved mother, Henrietta Haslett Porter, surrounded by her loving
children on September 5th, at the age of 96. A woman of extraordinary
vitality, strength and love of family, she lived life as a force of nature —
loving and unforgettable.
Born and raised in Yonkers, New York and moved to San Carlos,
California when she was 16 where she made many dear lifelong friends.
At 22, she purchased a train ticket and traveled alone throughout the
United States visiting friends and family eventually ending up back in
Yonkers. While staying with a friend there, she reconnected with her high
school sweetheart, Walter Haslett, who had just left the Army. They were
married shortly thereafter in 1954 and were happily married for 24 years
until Walter passed when she was 48 years old.
Henrietta worked for the Ossining School District and was well loved as
an aide in the library at Brookside School. On sunny days she was
known for riding her green moped to the school. She was an avid tennis
player, playing after work and weekends. She retired from the school
district and managed her son’s importing business, Island Imports
designs by Harry Haslett for over 35 years. She loved the opportunity of
working with her son. She was known for her semiannual Warehouse
Sales which she ran with her daughter Cynthia Hankin. At 84, she
retired from daily work and tennis but remained busy with semiannual
Warehouse Sales. She was well known for giving away the jewelry she
was wearing if you met her around town and happened to say you
admired it.
In 1981 Henrietta married Van Porter and was happily married for 32
years until his passing in 2013. They took many trips throughout the
world. He learned tennis and she learned golf.
She is survived by her children, Cynthia Hankin (Michael), Deborah
Haslett Sorbo, and Harry Haslett (Erica), her seven grandchildren, one
great grandchild, her stepchildren Scott Porter (Kathy) Mark Porter
(Linda) Alicia Keehn (Jeff), Jonathan Porter and their seven children.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Briarcliff Congregational Church at 2
PM on Sunday, September 13th. Henrietta was an active member of this
church for 70 years. Contributions can be made to the Congregational
Church, 30 South State Road, Briarcliff NY 10510 or the Briarcliff Manor
Fire Department, 1111 Pleasantville Road, Briarcliff, NY or OVAC, 8
