In honor of homecoming week at PVAMU, we’re going to celebrate and highlight the life of Julius W Becton Jr. (1931-2020).
He was a pro football player, military officer, and educator. He is best known for his time as a linebacker for the Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs of the American Football League (AFL). Becton quickly became one of the best linebackers in the AFL, earning three All-AFL selections and helping the Chiefs win the 1969 AFL championship.
Becton also served in the U.S. Army for nearly 40 years, including stints in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He earned two Silver Stars for his valorous actions and retired from the Army in 1983 at the rank of lieutenant general.
In 1989, Becton returned to Prairie View A&M as president. He served in that role until 1994, during which time the university experienced significant growth and development. Becton was inducted into the Prairie View A&M University Hall of Fame in 1985.
