Amazonite is named after the Amazon River of South America, although there are no known occurrences near that river. It has been used as a gem for over 2,000 years, and has been found in archaeological excavations of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.

Today the finest material comes from the Ilmensky Mountains of Russia, the Pikes Peak region of Colorado where it grows alongside smoky quartz, and deposits in Madagascar, Peru, and Brazil.

In ancient times, clear quartz, which is also called rock crystal, was used to carve crystal balls and people believed they could see into the future by gazing into them. The name quartz stems from the German quarz, derived from the Slavic word kwardy, meaning “hard.” The word “crystal” comes from the Greek krustallos which means “ice crystal,” because they thought quartz crystals were pieces of ice that were frozen so deeply they couldn’t melt again.

Canada’s enormous nephrite jade deposits contribute more than 70% of the world’s annual production. Canadian jade tells the story of the nation’s early settlers. The origin of Canadian jade can be difficult to trace, however it’s believed jade deposits were found in British Columbia in the late 1800s. It was gold-hunting Chinese settlers who identified the gem, as it was considered worthless by European miners at the time. Settlers began exporting the stone to international destinations, with commercialization seeing the value of the jade industry soar. Like New Zealand jade, Canada’s indigenous people have a long history with their jade, with Inuit people using the stone to create tools, ornaments and weapons; blades, knives, axes and hammers were all fashioned out of Canadian jade by Inuit people. Colors of Nephrite Jade range from pure white to all different shades of green.

Sapphire: September's Birthstone and The Gem of Royalty and Wisdom.

Sapphire is the most precious and valuable blue gemstone.

They were referred to as hyacinths – specifically the blue variety – in ancient times. Later, their color was likened to yet another flower: the cornflower, an evocative term that is still used today and signifies a very desirable hue of blue sapphire.

This gemstone has been treasured for centuries, adorning royalty, religious artifacts, and modern jewelry alike.

While blue is the most recognized, sapphires occur in almost every color except red (red corundum is classified as ruby).

All sapphires are technically considered precious gemstones because they belong to the corundum family, along with ruby. However, within the trade, some distinctions are made based on quality and rarity:

Precious Sapphire: Refers to stones of exceptional clarity, brilliance, and rich, uniform color—especially the coveted deep royal or cornflower blue sapphires. These high-grade gems are rare and command premium prices.

Semi-Precious Sapphire: This term is sometimes used for sapphires that are less saturated, lighter, or have noticeable inclusions. Fancy-colored sapphires (yellow, green, pink, etc.) may also be marketed this way, though they are still durable and valuable corundum gems.

In truth, “semi-precious” is more of a marketing label than a mineralogical one—all sapphires share the same hardness, durability, and essential qualities, regardless of whether they are blue, pink, or multi-colored.

Beyond its beauty, sapphire has long been associated with various mystical properties and symbolism. It is believed to:

Enhance wisdom and mental clarity: Sapphire is said to promote focus, concentration, and clear thinking.

Bring peace and tranquility: It is thought to calm the mind and emotions, promoting inner peace and spiritual connection.

Attract abundance and prosperity: Sapphire is associated with attracting wealth and good fortune.

Strengthen relationships: It symbolizes loyalty, faithfulness, and sincerity in love and friendships.
