October 14,1926 was the first published book of Winne-the-Pooh. Today at our movie day, we celebrated Winnie-the-Pooh's 100th birthday! We started the afternoon off with painting hunny pots and then we read "Finding Winnie."
"Finding Winnie" is the story of how Winnie-the-Pooh came to be: During World War I, a Canadian veterinarian named Harry Colebourn was traveling by train to join the army when he bought a little black bear cub from a hunter. He named her Winnie, after his hometown of Winnipeg, Canada. Harry brought Winnie with him to England, where she became a beloved companion to the soldiers. When Harry was sent to France, he left Winnie in the care of the London Zoo. A young boy named Christopher Robin Milne visited the zoo with his father, author A.A. Milne. Christopher Robin loved Winnie so much that he named his own teddy bear after her. His father was inspired by his son's love of the bear and began writing the stories about Winnie-the-Pooh that children have enjoyed for generations.
We combined Winnie-the-Pooh and Halloween for our movie of the day and watched Pooh's Halloween Movie while we enjoyed popcorn and honeycombs.
After the movie, we played Winnie-the-Pooh BINGO and the kids won Halloween prizes. The kids also had fun playing with balloons, a timeless classic to any birthday celebration.
