Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is a Florida State Park, encompassing a 21,000-acre savanna and home to a wild herd of American bison. Originally native to Florida, the species was eliminated by the 19th century due to hunting and development. The current herd, established in 1975 with 10 individuals from Oklahoma’s Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, has grown to approximately 50-70 animals. In addition to bison this state park is known for its extensive trail system and diverse wildlife such as wild ‘Spanish Cracker’ horses that roam this vast preserve. They are descendants of horses brought by 16th-century Spanish explorers, maintained as a herd of approximately 30-50+ animals, and were used by Seminole Native Americans and early Florida cowboys. 🐴🤠
I usually photograph all my own wildlife and landscaping scenery photos but please note the photos used in this post are Google images. I have yet to be lucky enough to take quality bison and horse photos of my own at Paynes Prairie! ☺️
