A month and two days ago we wrote that gold was $1277 an ounce.

At the time of this writing it is $1394.

Yesterday it spiked above $1400.

From time to time we get messages from people asking us “What’s the price of gold like? Is this a good time to sell?”

Cash was king in Houston two weeks ago.

Not credit cards. Not debit cards. Cash.

When the power is out, your cards can't be processed. When an emergency is imminent, keep cash in small denominations. Assume that merchants will not be able or willing to make change for your $100 bill. There have been cases in the past of merchants refusing to make change at all, so having a variety of denominations is wise.

As Irma approaches Florida, having a week's worth of cash on hand just makes sense. Be safe, Florida.
