Back in 2003 I remember hearing this song for the first time and loving it.

It’s about Nelly’s experience in the music industry trying to mold her into a cookie-cutter pop star image and become something she wasn’t.

But the line that always stuck with me was:

“But when you feel so powerless, what are you gonna do?”

When that happens to me, I put on some statement rings and my outlook immediately changes. I feel powerful.

And (by the way), when I wear rings on my pointer finger I feel like Superwoman. I’m at least 10x more powerful.

One of my favorite subjects at school was art (that probably doesn’t come as a surprise). One of the classes was to discuss our favorite artists. I chose to talk about Piet Mondrian. He did a series of paintings called Composition, with black lines and primary colors and that’s what the Metropolis collection was inspired by (not Frank Lloyd Wright as people often ask). I chose to call it the Metropolis collection as a nod to his New York series which he did later in his career (have you heard of the painting: Broadway Boogie Woogie? That’s Mondrian)

Another sling shot (see what I did there?). Whilst she doesn’t like being in the sling anymore, she does love being in on the jewelry making action. I use CAD to design a lot of my jewelry pieces, but I’ve also been using it to design and 3D print some useful jewelry tools (like this wax mitre box. I’ve also designed a photography light box. Any ideas for other jewelry tools which I could 3D print instead of buying? (Since jewelry tools are insanely expensive)

Do I repair jewelry that wasn’t purchased from me?

Absolutely.

Absolutely.

Maya brought me this ring after the original stone had fallen out. She suspected years of cleaning it (because dirt kept getting trapped in the bezel) may have loosened the setting over time.

Rather than replacing it with a similar stone, she wanted to take the opportunity to give the ring a new look. She wanted something flatter, more like a signet ring, with an opalescent glow.

We explored a few options: opal, moonstone, and mother of pearl. Opal isn’t ideal for an everyday ring. Most stones are cut with a domed top, but mother of pearl are not!

After sourcing several pieces of mother of pearl, Maya chose her favorite. Then came the fun part… making it fit.

The stone was slightly too tall for the setting, so I carefully removed metal from underneath the bezel to create enough space for it to sit flat and flush.

Maya loved the finished ring.

There’s something really satisfying about giving a piece of jewelry a second life.

I’ve been making a lot of custom pieces lately. This one is an opal necklace using an opal the customer picked up in Thailand. I love making custom pieces because it’s such a delight seeing the customer’s vision come to life and seeing their faces light up when they see the end result.

Do you have a favorite? I have a few! Actually. I love all of them, I can’t choose one over another. One of the reasons I got into jewelry designing and making was because I couldn’t find jewelry that I loved. I liked statement pieces, but the pieces I liked were always costume jewelry with crappy glued in gemstones. I liked (and still do) pieces that didn’t have gemstones and I wanted them in sterling silver, not a metal that was going to turn my fingers green. So, being crafty (I love making things, no matter what it is), I decided to try and make something… and my jewelry making journey evolved from there.
