Let’s get crafty and make a Lei-go Lei!
I probably should have shared this in the spring when everyone was in lei-making mode, but save this one for later!
LEGO lei aren’t anything new to Hawaiʻi—my kids have received a few over the years—but I recently learned that you can order the individual pieces directly from LEGO.com and make them yourself for a fraction of the price.
Shoutout to bricksminifigsanaheim for sharing this tip with me! If you’re ever in the Anaheim area, go check them out.
To find individual pieces on LEGO.com:
Go to Shop → Bricks & Pieces → Pieces by Category → Animals & Nature.
From there, use the search bar to look for pieces like “red flower” or “green leaf.” Just make sure you check the dimensions before ordering! A few pieces arrived much smaller than I expected because I didn’t pay close enough attention.
For my double-twisted Puakenikeni/Ilima Lei-go lei, I used:
• 330 pieces of “FLOWER, W/ 3.2 SHAFT, 1.5 HOLE, NO. 1” in Flame Yellowish Orange
• 16 pieces of “PLANT, W/ PLATE 2X3X2, NO. 1” in Dark Green
String the LEGO pieces onto clear filament or thin ribbon. Make one long strand then double it up and twist it goether to form one lei that looks like two. Tie the ends securely, and finish it off with a ribbon.
This lei is great because it lasts forever. I think a forever lei is meant to keep giving- wear it, celebrate it, keep it, and/or even pass it on 🫶🏼
Save this for grad season! Or what I did, make some now to have on hand for special occasions.
Happy crafting 🪡🌸
**Note on shipping- when I placed my order, the pieces came in two shipments. The first shipment came with in a few days, but the second shipment came a couple weeks later. Not sure if that’s just a Hawaii problem, but make sure to give yourself a couple weeks to receive.
