Let’s talk about two emotions people are almost afraid to admit: HELPLESSNESS and DISGUST toward a parent.

Yes, you can love your parents and still feel this.

Sometimes you’ve explained yourself 100 times. You’ve tried being patient. You’ve stayed quiet. You’ve argued. You’ve helped. You’ve forgiven.

But the same pattern continues.

Control. Criticism. Negativity. Stubbornness. Guilt. Constant unhappiness. Disrespecting boundaries. Creating chaos and then wondering why everyone is exhausted.

Eventually you reach a point where you think:

“I can’t change them.”

That’s helplessness.

And sometimes helplessness eventually becomes resentment or even disgust.

Not necessarily disgust toward the person — but toward the behavior and the pattern.

You’re tired of absorbing someone else’s unhappiness.

You’re tired of feeling guilty for wanting peace.

And here is something many adult children need to hear:

You can love your parents without allowing their behavior to control your life.

You can forgive and still have boundaries.

You can respect someone and still say NO.

You can stop explaining yourself.

You can leave the argument.

You can refuse to participate in the same unhealthy cycle.

Sometimes breaking a generational pattern begins with one simple decision:

“I love you, but I will no longer sacrifice my peace trying to keep you happy.”

💭 Have you ever felt helplessness, resentment, or even disgust because of a parent’s repeated behavior? Which emotion was the hardest for you to admit?
