Gibberella ear rot is showing up across Ohio. Scout fields before harvest & identify problems early.

🌧️ Why 2026?
This season's frequent rainfall, extended cloud cover, and moderate temperatures have created favorable conditions for development. Pioneer risk forecast has northwest OH at med-high risk for Gibberella ear rot (see map)

🔍 What to Watch For:
Pink to reddish mold that typically begins at the ear tip. Severe infections can cause extensive ear rot, with husks tightly adhering to the ear and mold visible beneath the husks.

🌽 Important Reminder:
Gibberella ear rot can produce mycotoxins which are toxic to swine and poultry.

✅ Scout fields now:
Prioritize scouting hybrids with low disease score. Identify higher-risk fields to help prioritize harvest order and reduce grain quality risks.

Harvest season has begun!

To the farm families in harvest season:

We see the lights in the fields long after the sun goes down.

We know harvest doesn’t care much about weekends or bedtime or what was already on the calendar.

And for those of us who aren’t living it, it’s easy to drive past those fields and forget how much work is happening out there.

So this is simply a thank you.

For the early mornings and late nights.
For the generations of knowledge behind the work.
For the families who sacrifice time together during these weeks.
For carrying the worry of weather and yields and prices, and still getting up the next morning to do it all again.

There is so much about farming most of us will never fully understand.

But we know we benefit from your work every single day.

So when we see those combines moving across the fields this fall, we’ll remember there’s a family behind every one of them.

Thank you for feeding your neighbors, your communities, and people you will never meet.

We’re grateful for you.

And we hope the weather cooperates, the equipment behaves, the coffee stays hot, and everyone makes it home safely at the end of another long day.
