Minted in Lima in 1712, this 8 Escudos went down with the legendary 1715 Spanish treasure fleet off Florida’s coast.

But surviving a shipwreck is only part of its story. Look at what survived WITH it: visible 1712 dates on BOTH sides, the Pillars of Hercules, and a bold cross surrounded by lions and castles.

Its gold content, age, shipwreck history, detail and collector demand all contribute to its value. At 26.83 grams and certified by NGC as AU Details, this coin gives collectors plenty to look at—and centuries to talk about.

No two shipwreck coins look quite alike. Each one was cut and struck by hand, leaving its own shape, strike, and little imperfections.

This Grade 1 Atocha 4 reales, minted in Potosí, has a detail you can actually spot: the lions and castles on the cross side are transposed. The overlay shows where they usually sit. Then it fades, and you can see how this coin differs.

This silver coin was minted in Boeotia, Thebes, around 395–387 BCE. One side bears the distinctive Boeotian shield; the other shows an amphora. Today, it’s set in sterling silver with 14K gold details. 🛡️🗡

Thebes is also known for the Sacred Band: 300 elite warriors traditionally described as 150 pairs of male lovers who fought side by side. Imagine the stories tied to the city that made this coin.
