Some people have a drinking problem. Some of us have a rock problem.

There’s a certain kind of person who can’t walk beside a river without stopping every thirty feet to investigate something on the ground. What was supposed to be a nice afternoon outdoors turns into three hours of bending over, rinsing suspicious-looking rocks in the water, and trying to decide whether another five pounds will fit in your pockets.

And the funny thing is, most of those rocks aren’t worth a damn thing. They’re just interesting. Maybe they’ve got a strange color, an unusual shape, or a little sparkle that caught your eye. That’s apparently all the justification required to haul them halfway across the country.

The real trouble starts when you get home. There are rocks on the porch, rocks in the garden, rocks in the car, and at least one sitting somewhere in the house because you haven’t figured out what to do with it yet.

But there’s something pretty wonderful about people who can spend an entire afternoon entertaining themselves with things the rest of the world walks right past.

Besides, there are much worse things to be addicted to than fresh air, muddy shoes, and bringing home another rock nobody needed.
