A glacier and an ice cube—what can they teach us about diamonds?

Ice is frozen water (H₂O).
Diamond is carbon (C) arranged in a specific crystal structure.

A glacier forms in nature. An ice cube forms in your freezer. Both are ice—their origins are different.

A similar comparison helps explain natural and lab-grown diamonds.

Natural diamonds form deep within the Earth. Lab-grown diamonds grow in specialized equipment under controlled conditions. Both are diamonds, with essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and physical and optical properties.

The comparison is about what they are, not how they are made: growing a diamond is much more complex than freezing water!
