My personal Facebook feed has suddenly become inundated with pictures and reels of AI-generated, so-called timepiece movements. All of them are completely ridiculous and pointless, with gears that don't mesh, mislabeled functions, and oodles of completely useless gears, screws and plates. Don't people have better things to do with AI? And is this the same AI that's supposed to end humanity, and it can't even match a pinion to a gear? Pathetic.

On this day in 1631, King Charles I signed the charter establishing the Clockmakers Company. I've been a member (a "Freeman") of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers (London) since 2018. They do many things to promote the study and importance of horology and I'm proud to be part of that.

Both these clocks were gifted to me in non-running order. I had not worked on either of these types of clocks before. Even though I'm not officially in the business any more, I still enjoy a challenge!
