One of our founders, Sara Spencer Campbell ran The Children's Theatre Press, publishing numerous theatrical scripts out of Anchorage, KY. Throughout her life, Mrs. Campbell was a renowned figure throughout the country for her contributions to children's theatre.
In the 9/13/1964 issue of the Courier-Journal, Sara is quoted:
"'The irony in children's theatre is that the parents buy the tickets. And many think if Cinderella isn't in the title, the play is not good. Fairy tale themes never will wane, it would be a great tragedy if they did.' But it is her feeling that among the cherished old tales should be introduced original adventurous plays presenting children with the necessity of choice."
It was that sentiment which led The Children's Theatre Press to publish unique works such as "The Panda and The Spy" which we produced in 1953.
73 years later we are still producing adventurous productions for children. Unfortunately we cannot locate the original panda costume, nor even a synopsis of the curiously titled "The Panda and the Spy." If you can use your imagination to dream up the plot of the play, we'd love to hear it! 🐼
On October 22, please join us in toasting the people like Sara Spencer Campbell who led our theatre to our 80th anniversary. We are calling aumni, former performers, and longtime supporters to celebrate with us! 🎉
