Auto repair shops caution customers to get repairs done before the snow
If you have a major car repair on your radar, now might be the time to take care of it according to mechanics. Some car repair shops in northeast Wisconsin are saying that customers today, could be waiting weeks to take care of any major repairs, and if a weather event comes our way it could get even worse.

In the Village of Bellevue mechanics at Al Huss' Auto and Truck are trying to keep up with the onslaught of business.

"Demand for service right now has been overwhelming at some points," says Service Manager John Leclair.

Leclair admits it's a good problem to have, business-wise, but it's a pain for many of his customers.

"For our customers, it is tough for them to get in and get their cars back in a timely matter sometimes."

Of course, a scheduled appointment helps a lot, with the average scheduled customer at Al Huss' waiting about a week for a repair to be completed. But for those jobs that are unexpected and considered a major repair like a transmission being fixed, it could mean you're out of a vehicle for weeks.

"Some are planners and some just kind of wait till it wrecks. And then those are kind of the ones that will end up waiting, you know," says Laclair.

Leclair says part of the holdup, is getting parts in a timely matter right now. He says with many in the parts sector being impacted by COVID-19 there are time delays in getting parts delivered.

"There just seems to be a kink in the chain of communication with some companies just to get the job done."

And while a two-week window for a job to get done would be stressful enough, some mechanics warn that if winter comes early and everyone shows up to the auto repair shop at once, the delay for a repair could get worse.

"That's going to put the wait back. It could be a month sometimes and that's going to be hard for a lot of people to absorb that."

So, if you're having a lingering car problem now mechanics say getting a scheduled appointment today could prevent you from being without your car for weeks down the road.

A hidden gem
Kirkberg has offered jewelry merchandise for 125 years
A long-standing tradition of business in the city of Fort Dodge continues on with the third generation.

For over 125 years, the Kirkberg family has been offering jewelry merchandise and service in Fort Dodge and the surrounding areas.

Cary Estlund and her husband Steve Estlund have owned Kirkberg Connections for the 20 years, carrying on rich history that began in 1888.

Cary Estlund said Kirkberg Jewelers was started by her grandparents H.C. and Marie Kirkberg.

The second generation was Estlund’s parents, Robert and Mary Lee Kirkberg who joined the business in 1958 and officially took over in the late 1960s.
Estlund said she and her siblings grew up working in the family business.

“We would make bows to put on the packages, ran errands, swept the backroom,” she said. “Then when we were old enough to wait on customers we did, so, we started at a very young age.”

Although the ownership of the company has changed, Estlund said the philosophy is still the same, but the way the store is operated, however, has changed.

“It’s the same quality and service at a fair price, but what has changed is in the way of running a retail business without a lot of inventory,” she said.

By taking this unique route of running a business, Estlund believes she is able to cater to her customers’ needs, versus just not giving them only what a store carries.

Living Room Realty offers maintenance and repair service for commercial property owners
A new service, The Fixers, was introduced this autumn by Living Room Realty to serve clients with home rentals and investment properties with maintenance and repairs. Additionally, The Fixers can help real estate agents and their clients complete repairs to prepare a home for sale.

“We’re excited to offer this much needed service to property owners and agents,” said Jenelle Isaacson, Living Room owner. “The job market for skilled labor is tight and we’ve been working to build up our maintenance team for a while.

“Thanks to a great relationship with Oregon Tradeswomen, we’ve attracted top talent in the field and built a great team of highly skilled professionals,” she said.

NYCHA Introduces New Repair Service Order System
NYCHA residents often report struggling to get the repairs and service requests they need in their apartments. A new program aims to fix that challenge.

Since October 26, the Ravenswood, Queensbridge, and Astoria Houses have become the first NYCHA complexes to decentralize their service order system and break off from the housing authority’s central repair center at 250 Broadway.

Two New Orleans S&WB turbines still out of service; other repairs won't wrap until mid-2021.
The New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board’s power supply remains weak, with two turbines that went down before or during Hurricane Zeta still out of service and testing needed for other generators that provide electricity to the pumps, officials said Wednesday.

The issues are a combination of new problems, including the failure of a turbine that serves as one of the main power supplies for the utility, and long-awaited repairs that will take until the middle of 2021 to complete, Executive Director Ghassan Korban told the utility’s board. But even in a best-case scenario, that means months in which the power supply will remain on a knife’s edge.

NYCHA’s New Repair Service Order System Debuts in Western Queens.

U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Astoria and Long Island City, parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan), a longtime advocate of such a system, mourned how the current one wasn’t as good as the one during her time on the City Council decades prior.
“Back then, the system was that if you had a problem, if you had something that needed to be repaired, when you went to the NYCHA office at the development, and they had work crews and people there who could repair. It wasn’t a problem, people were getting their repairs,” she recalled.

Under the centralized system, tenants have been unable to get any issues with their apartments addressed.

“According to the residents, people don’t come. If they do come and the repair notice says `paint one wall,’ if the entire bathroom needs to be painted, they won’t paint it. They’ll just paint that one wall,” Maloney explained. “Each little repair has to have a repair notice, and it’s not working. You could be an electrician and spend half your time traveling from Queens to Brooklyn to Manhattan to the Bronx, instead of being right there ready for repair.”

Following pressure to change the system, NYCHA Chair Greg Russ agreed to start a three-month pilot program in the Western Queens complexes. Each of them has an office with on-site repair professionals that are available five days a week.

Rochel Leah Goldblatt, a spokesperson for NYCHA, expressed optimism about the program.

”By decentralizing skilled trades, which include staff who make in-unit repairs, and changing the work order system, staff have more time to work on site and create better relationships with management staff and residents,” she said. “We look forward to using the results of the program to help shape NYCHA’s future and implement portfolio-wide changes to how NYCHA does repairs.”

Still, Maloney is eager to ensure the new program works as smoothly as possible. Referencing a conversation with a tenant association leader, she assured this reporter that despite progress on getting service orders completed, she should not get too complacent.

“This weekend, I am going to go to the three projects and meet with tenants that got the repairs,” said Maloney. “On Monday, I’m gonna go around all three developments and meet with the offices on how the program is working. It could be a game changer.”

She continued, acknowledging that she could not accomplish this alone.

“I’d like to thank the head of NYCHA for giving me the opportunity to have the model program, and he says that if it’s successful, then they will expand it further into other developments throughout the five boroughs,” she said.
