Size didn't matter. Spanish colonial coins were exchanged around the world because of their purity of silver and gold and there consistency on weight. Here are two escudo cobs minted around the same time by the same assayer. But, one is a 2 escudos cob and the other is a 4 escudos cob. The 4 escudos cob is exactly twice the weight of the 2 escudos cob but their are almost the same width. These were minted in the 16th Century in Spain, most likely from gold from the New World.

In the coin business, we call this a double strike. Whoever struck this coin saw that it wasn't enough and struck it again with much harder force. The lower horizontal line was the first strike and when he put the die on it again, he struck it a little higher.
