SOLD — and now staying in a private collection.

How often do you think another one like this will come along?

A beautifully preserved 1957 Rolex Oyster Precision Ref. 6422, featuring an exceptionally rare Explorer-style Chevron dial, its original bracelet, and box.

What makes this watch particularly fascinating is the condition of its dial. Unlike luminous dials, this non-luminous version avoided the aging and discoloration associated with the degradation of radium-based luminous material. The result is a remarkably well-preserved dial, with its original character still beautifully intact.

Collectors often associate rare Rolex watches with the Daytona, but the world of vintage Rolex is far deeper than that. Sometimes, the most fascinating discoveries are found in the simplest Oyster models, where unusual dial variations and exceptional originality make all the difference.

Rarity isn’t always about the model or price. Sometimes, it’s about the details.

After demand for the manually Daytonas, such as the references 6263 and 6265, declined in the 1980s, Rolex needed to bring the Daytona into the modern era with an automatic chronograph movement.

At the time, Rolex didn’t have an automatic chronograph movement of its own, so they turned to Zenith’s El Primero as the base. Rolex extensively modified the movement, reducing its frequency and replacing or reworking many components, ultimately creating the Rolex Caliber 4030.

This led to the introduction of the reference 16520 the first automatic Daytona and the beginning of a completely new chapter for the Daytona.

At first glance, it may look like a regular stainless steel Daytona but this particular example is quite special.

It’s from the very first years of production and features one of the early ā€œfloating Cosmographā€ dials, where the COSMOGRAPH text sits slightly separated from the other dial text.

There are also several other details that set these early examples apart:

• The bezel has the ā€œunits per hourā€ scale positioned differently, with the marking at 3 o’clock rather than the later configuration.

• The bracelet is fully brushed, including the center links, rather than having polished center links.

• The clasp is the earlier-style clasp, rather than the later clasp design with the flip-lock.

These small details may seem minor, but on vintage and neo-vintage Rolex, tiny differences in the dial, bezel, bracelet, and clasp can make a significant difference in collectibility and value.

That’s what makes early 16520s so fascinating to collectors the details are in the details. #16520
