Another breakthrough in mechanical watch accuracy has been achieved with the introduction of the Zenith Defy Lab watch. The oscillator which does away with the balance wheel, hairspring and escapement, vibrates at 15Hz or 108,000 beats per hour giving this timepiece an accuracy of a little over .3 seconds per day, with an amplitude of +/- 6 degrees. This is truly amazing when compared to many of the higher end mechanical timepieces running at 28,000 (or 36,000) beats per hour and approximately 280 degrees amplitude with variations in this rate for the given position of the balance wheel. I have been wondering for some time what the process is for the manufacturing some of the new parts found in many of today's fine timepieces. These parts require no polishing upon completion of the process as they are grown as you will see in the video. They are, many times, etched with the makers name and/or a number. The process is referred to as LIGA which is German for Lithographic (Lithography) Galvanoforming (Electroplating) Abformung (and Molding).
