VENICE ONCE KEPT TIME BACKWARDS.

Inside the Senate Chamber of Venice’s Doge’s Palace hang two extraordinary survivors from the age of the Republic.

One is a 24-hour clock whose hand travels counterclockwise, following the old Italian system of counting the day from sunset.

Beside it, another dial looks beyond the hours entirely toward the zodiac and the movement of the heavens.

But the best part is the human story.

By 1534, Bernardino Penzin had been entrusted with maintaining the palace clocks. His pay was later cut for neglect. In 1562, he was fired.

Then fire tore through the palace in 1574 and damaged the clocks.

Venice hired him back.

Apparently, the man they dismissed was also one of the only men who knew how to bring the machinery back to life.

Five centuries later, the clocks still hang above the room where Venetian senators debated trade, diplomacy, money and war.

Before timekeeping became something we wore, it was infrastructure.

Today we honor those who gave everything for our freedom.

But Memorial Day is not just one day on a calendar.

For someone, somewhere, every day is Memorial Day.

Every day, a family visits a grave.
Every day, a folded flag sits on a shelf.
Every day, a watch stops ticking for a hero whose time ran out too soon.

These watches carried through deployments, missions, wars, and long nights far from home.
Not luxury pieces. Not status symbols.
Just tools that stayed on the wrist until the very end.

Some came home scratched and faded.
Some never came home at all.

Behind every worn bezel and faded dial is a name, a story, and a sacrifice most of us will never fully understand.

Today we remember them.

And tomorrow, someone else will too.

While exploring, take time to stop and smell the Edelweiss.
