Someone tell me I am not the only one?

In line at the grocery check out, waiting in the doctor’s office, driving alone in my car – in all these places, my thoughts can begin to spin with worry. I can race ahead into the future to start solving all the imaginary problems I don’t have yet or go back in time and redo all the things I messed up over and over again.

I have begun trying to take Paul’s instruction in Philippians 4 for replacing these thoughts to heart. I will notice my anxiety increasing and say out loud, “Stop.”

Then I will ask God a question. “God, are you anxious about this? Are you worried?” It might sound silly, but it helps.

Then I will ask Him to call to mind who I am and who He is:

I am loved, I am safe, I am created in His image.

He is my Wonderful Counselor, my Strong Father, my Savior. He is the King of King and the Lord of Lord, the one who holds the Universe in His hands.
