Sometimes accomplishment doesn’t look like a finished piece. Sometimes it looks like 150 little pieces waiting for their moment. ✧
This morning, I was feeling strangely unaccomplished.
I had been working since Friday, moving from one process to another, yet somehow I kept measuring the weekend by what was finished—and by that measure, it didn’t feel like enough.
Then I gathered everything I had worked on and laid it across the workshop counters and desk.
And suddenly, the story looked very different.
Stones have been set. Silver and gold plating has been completed. Enameled pieces sit finished and waiting. Handmade links and chains are gathered. Silk flowers and enameled dried flowers are ready. Components have been shaped, treated, prepared and refined.
More than 150 individual pieces now sit before me, waiting to become just shy of 15 finished works of art—pieces that will eventually be worn, seen, gifted, displayed, and become part of someone’s own expression of self. Some will become adornment. Some will become ornaments for home and office.
And looking at all of that, I realized something important:
I had been judging success by the final step and forgetting to celebrate every step that made the final step possible.
How often do we do that in the rest of our lives?
We look at the goal still ahead and somehow overlook all the distance we have already traveled. We count only the finished thing and forget the planning, learning, mistakes, practice, courage, patience, rebuilding, and quiet work that carried us there.
But progress is not only the moment something becomes complete.
Progress is every step in between.
So today, I am choosing to celebrate the work already done.
The stones set.
The metal shaped.
The flowers preserved.
The chains formed.
The lessons learned.
The hours invested.
The finished pieces will come.
But this morning, surrounded by all the evidence of what has already been accomplished, I am feeling very accomplished indeed.
Celebrate the steps in between. They are part of the masterpiece, too. ✧
